We’re super excited to have teamed up with Rosie Bancroft – ex GB para-swimmer, current (almost) dive master!
What’s your name and who are ya?
Hi, I’m Rosie – I’m 25 and live in Manchester. I was born missing my leg and wear a prosthetic. I was a professional para-swimmer for many years training with the GB team. I also studied Zoology at University of Manchester!
How did you first hear about Legs4Africa?
My friend Julie Rogers – she’s an ambassador and posted about it.
Why were you attracted to the cause?
I spent a month volunteering in Tanzania in a centre for disabled children. The people I met were the most loving, generous and full of life of any I have met. I saw first-hand what it’s like to be a disabled person in an African country and how far things that seem small to us go over there and what a difference it can make.
What are you most excited to achieve with L4A?
I have spent my life missing my leg without any limits, never seeing my leg as a reason I couldn’t do something – if anything it had made me more determined to achieve everything I can in life and to prove some people wrong. I’m very aware that I am able to live the life I do now because I was lucky enough to born in a country which has supported my disability and provided me access to prosthetics, physios, doctors to make sure it doesn’t get in the way of life. I would love so much to be able to help other people
who don’t have this access support.
What are your big plans for 2021?
I’m quitting my job and leaving for Bali in January to complete my dive master and work as an intern on a conservation research project! I’ve been a big scuba diver for years and want to combine my career goals in wildlife conservation with my love for diving. I also am a huge travel addict so love that I will be off exploring the world! I’ve also just started a blog – One Fin Wanderer to share my journey, tips on travelling and diving.
What’s your perfect meal deal, including the supermarket?
I love a pasta salad, chocolate bar and iced coffee from Tescos!
Tell us a fun fact about you:
Everyone who knows me knows I love a night out – if I’m not under the water you’ll probably find me with a cocktail on the dance floor!
Rosie has already donated an old prosthetic leg to us and will be supporting our fundraising and communications team in 2021 – helping to boost awareness of our little cause. Follow us on Instagram to keep in the loop
