Münch und Hahn GmbH & Co. KG is a third-generation family business based in Duisburg, Germany. For over 70 years they have been producing orthopedic aids and prosthetics of the highest quality and, like most innovators of prosthetics, they reused suitable parts in their design and testing. However, since a new European law was introduced in 2021, all components used in R & D have to be new, resulting in a storeroom full of now redundant parts which were destined for landfill.
Fortunately, they came across Legs4Africa. Based in the UK Legs4Africa collect unwanted prosthetics, and break them down into their reusable components which are then shipped to carefully selected hospitals and mobility clinics in sub-Saharan Africa. Here they are used to produce an affordable well-fitting prosthetic leg for people living with limb difference who would otherwise have no access to an artificial limb.
The parts in Münch und Hahn’s storeroom were packed up and sent to Legs4Africa where they were included in a shipment for The Gambia. They will be the means for several people to be able to go back to school, support their families, socialise and dance!
